Last year Latvijas Pasts dedicated stamps to a number of this country’s outstanding personalities representing various fields: the founder and director of the Dailes Theatre Eduards Smiļģis (1886–1966), the merited chemistry scientist and sports enthusiast Emīlija Gudriniece (1920–2004) and the first winner of an Olympic medal in Latvia and the first European champion in race walking Jānis Daliņš (1904–1978).

Highlighting the anniversary of a significant cultural event, a stamp was issued in honour of the first Latvian national opera Baņuta, which marked the 100th anniversary of its premiere. In turn, an international event is depicted on a stamp issued in connection with the International Year of Plant Health declared by the United Nations last year.

Two philatelic releases of 2020, comprising a total of eight stamps, were issued on a self-adhesive base: the Coats of Arms of Latvian Towns and Municipalities and the stamps in the traditional Christmas series.

The issue of well-known and traditional stamp series also continued in 2020: for example, a stamp in the series Unique Exhibits of the Latvian Museum of Natural History was dedicated to the Baltic amber specimens found in Latvia, the series Outstanding Latvian Artists was supplemented with a stamp block in honour of the world-renowned Latvian artist Gustav Klutsis (Gustavs Klucis), while a stamp in the series Latvian Architecture depicted the water tower at Alīses Street painted by the artist Aleksejs Naumovs. Last year the stamps in the joint Europa series featured ancient postal routes, and the Latvian Birds series was supplemented with stamp releases featuring the common kingfisher, Bird of the Year 2020, and the hazel grouse.

A postage stamp is a postage voucher, which is used worldwide to pay for the forwarding of postal items, and at the same time a stamp can also be a valuable collectible item. The Latvian postage stamp issue plan is determined by the specially established Stamp Issue Committee.
