Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp on the 150th anniversary of the writer Ernests Birznieks-Upītis

On the 26th of March 2021 Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp and a cover in honour of the 150th anniversary of Ernests Birznieks-Upītis, one of the most outstanding Latvian writers who mainly depicted the life of Latvian farm workers at the beginning of the 20th century in his literary works. The new stamp will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. Those interested in the first day cancellation options are invited to contact us by writing to the e-mail address: filatelija@pasts.lv

The face value of the new stamp is € 1.27, which corresponds to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class from 21 to 100 grams within Latvia, and its print run is 50,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,000 copies. The philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja.

In the visual presentation of the philatelic releases the artist used materials from the Literature and Music Museum’s collections. The design of the stamp features a photograph with the writer’s portrait taken in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, in 1913, and an excerpt from a bookplate created by the graphic artist Alberts Kronenbergs. The cover depicts a fragment of the handwriting of E. Birznieks-Upītis, as well as an illustration by the artist Indriķis Zeberiņš from the book Pelēkā akmeņa stāsti (Tales of the Grey Stone) (possible year of publication of the book – 1923).

E. Birznieks-Upītis (1871–1960), whose real name is Ernests Birznieks, was a Latvian writer, translator, publisher and librarian. In his literary works he mainly depicted the life of Latvian farm workers at the beginning of the 20th century and paid a lot of attention to natural phenomena. E. Birznieks-Upītis got his pen name and gained great popularity thanks to his collection of stories Upīša stāsti (Upītis' Stories) published in 1900. Among the writer's most famous works are Pastariņa triloģija (Pastariņš’ Trilogy) and Nīnas pasaciņas (Nīna's Fairy Tales).

The new stamp and the cover Ernests Birznieks-Upītis – 150 can be seen here.

Taking into consideration that public events, including the first day stamp cancellation at post offices, are currently suspended due to security requirements, stamp collectors and those interested in philately are invited to contact the Stamp and Philately Department of Latvijas Pasts regarding stamp cancellation options by writing to the e-mail address: filatelija@pasts.lv.
