The latest Latvijas Pasts stamp block in the series Outstanding Latvian Artists: Jānis Pauļuks – 115
On 2 September 2021 Latvijas Pasts issues the sixth stamp block in the series Outstanding Latvian Artists. The new release is devoted to the painter Jānis Pauļuks (1906–1984). It features motifs from the artist’s works held in the Latvian National Museum of Art and materials from the Misiņš Library of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia. The new block of two stamps will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. Those interested in the first day cancellation options are invited to contact us by writing to the e-mail address: filatelija@pasts.lv.

To mark the 115th anniversary of J. Pauļuks, Latvijas Pasts releases a two-stamp block dedicated to the artist in the series Outstanding Latvian Artists with a print run of 20,000 copies and a special cover with a print run of 1,000 copies. The face value of each stamp is € 1.00, which corresponds to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class up to 20 grams within Latvia. The philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Lilija Dinere.

In the visual design of the stamp block and the cover the artist has used Zigurds Konstants’ monograph Jānis Pauļuks (2006), reproductions of paintings from the works of J. Pauļuks held in the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art: Felicita raibā kleitiņā (Felicita in a Colourful Dress) (1943–1944), Felicita ar krellēm (Felicita with Beads) (1944) and the central parts of the triptych Saulkrasti (1976), as well as materials from the Misiņš Library of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia.

J. Pauļuks was a modernist and creative seeker of Latvian painting of the second half of the 20th century. His works at the initial stage were created over a long process, applying a rich layer of texture of vibrant colour and a dark overall tone on the surface of the painting, whereas in the subsequent years the artist’s paintings were characterised by a bright colour palette and a virtuosic and almost transparent light brush stroke. J. Pauļuks was an outstanding landscape painter, but his interests were mostly related to portraits and self-portraits, trying to prove himself as a figure painter: he often portrayed his wife Felicita Pauļuka (1925–2014) as the ideal of a woman’s figure.

The stamp series Outstanding Latvian Artists has been issued since 2016 and five stamp blocks dedicated to different Latvian artists have been released over this time: Janis Rozentāls (2016), Jānis Tīdemanis (2017), Ansis Cīrulis (2018), Johans Valters (2019) and Gustavs Klucis (2020). All philatelic releases in this series can be viewed here
