The new stamp in the series Lighthouses of Latvia features Irbe Lighthouse, the only lighthouse in the territorial waters of Latvia

On the 17th of September 2021 Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp and a cover in the series Lighthouses of Latvia. The new stamp features Irbe Lighthouse, which is the only lighthouse in the territorial waters of Latvia. The new stamp will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. Those interested in the first day cancellation options are invited to contact us by writing to the e-mail address: filatelija@pasts.lv

The print run of the stamp Irbe Lighthouse is 50,000 copies and its face value is €1.27, which corresponds to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class from 21 to 100 grams within Latvia. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,000 copies. The new philatelic releases have been designed by the artist A. Ozola-Jaunarāja.

In the design of the stamp the artist has used an aerial photograph by the photographer Juris Kalniņš, which depicts Irbe Lighthouse.

Irbe Lighthouse is the only offshore lighthouse in Latvia, located in the Irbe Strait of the Baltic Sea, 20 kilometres from the shore. The lighthouse was built in 1986, but before that the safety of navigation in the Irbe Strait was provided by the Irbensky lightship, a floating lighthouse. The lighthouse is 37 metres high, its tower has 14 floors, and its visibility is 10 nautical miles. The white light on the lighthouse flashes every 10 seconds. Irbe Lighthouse is the property of the Maritime Administration of Latvia, but it is managed by the Freeport of Riga Authority.

The new stamp and the cover Irbe Lighthouse can be seen here.

Latvijas Pasts started issuing stamps in the series Lighthouses of Latvia in 2003, and 15 stamps dedicated to the lighthouses of Latvia have been released in the series until now: Šlītere Lighthouse (2019), Ragaciems Lighthouse (2018), Roja Lighthouse (2017), Ovīši Lighthouse (2016), Salacgrīva Lighthouse (2015), Ainaži Lighthouse (2014), Užava Lighthouse (2010), Liepāja Lighthouse (2009), Akmeņrags Lighthouse (2008), Pape Lighthouse (2007), Mērsrags Lighthouse (2006), Daugavgrīva Lighthouse (2005), Miķeļbāka Lighthouse (2004) and Kolka Lighthouse (2003).
