Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp block in honour of Jānis Lūsis, a legendary javelin thrower

On the 24th of September 2021 Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp block to honour the javelin thrower Jānis Lūsis, a legendary Latvian athlete. The new stamp block will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. Those interested in the first day cancellation options are invited to contact us by writing to the e-mail address: filatelija@pasts.lv.

The stamp block Legends of Latvian Sports – Jānis Lūsis has a print run of 4,500 copies and a face value of € 2.69, corresponding to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class from 21 to 100 grams to the countries located in zone 4. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 800 copies. The new philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

In the visual design the artist has used materials from the Latvian Sports Museum.

Jānis Lūsis (1939–2020) is one of the most remarkable Latvian athletes and the most outstanding Latvian javelin thrower of all time: he is champion of the 1968 Summer Olympics, ten-time Latvian champion, four-time European champion (1962, 1966, 1969 and 1971), twelve-time USSR champion and two-time world record holder: 91.98 metres (1968) and 93.80 metres (1972) in javelin throwing. In 1987 J. Lūsis was recognised as the most outstanding javelin thrower in the world by the International Association of Athletics Federations, and in 2014 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Association of Athletics Federations for his special contribution to sports.

The new stamp and the cover Legends of Latvian Sports – Jānis Lūsis can be seen here.
