Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp on the 150th anniversary of the Latvian writer and poet Jānis Poruks

On 13 October 2021 Latvijas Pasts issues a new postage stamp and a cover in honour of Jānis Poruks, one of the most outstanding representatives of Latvian literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The new stamp will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. Those interested in the first day cancellation options are invited to contact us by writing to the e-mail address: filatelija@pasts.lv.

The face value of the new stamp is €1.00, which corresponds to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class up to 20 grams within Latvia. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,000 copies.

The visual design of the stamp and the cover created by the artist of the philatelic releases Lilija Dinere is based on the materials from the Misiņš Library of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia.

Jānis Poruks (1871–1911) is one of the most outstanding representatives of Latvian literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. His works have been intellectually influenced by both European cultural tradition and contemporary art, while maintaining a connection with the specifics of the Latvian environment. The writer’s literary creation is related to the formation of the cultural type of romanticism in Latvian literature; it has the features of neo-romanticism and symbolism, while the works mark and comprehensively address the issues of physical and spiritual existence important for the society and the individual at the turn of the century.

The new stamp and the cover Jānis Poruks – 150 can be seen here.

The first day stamp cancellation is not being held at post offices during the spread of the COVID-19 infection, so stamp collectors and those interested in philately are invited to contact the Stamp and Philately Department of Latvijas Pasts regarding stamp cancellation options by writing to the e-mail address: filatelija@pasts.lv.

The new stamp and the cover will first be available for purchase at Riga post office No. 10 at 41/43 Elizabetes Street and at the post centre Sakta at 32 Brīvības bulvāris, Riga, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/.
