Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp dedicated to the centenary of the Constitution, the fundamental law of the Republic of Latvia

To mark the centenary of the fundamental law of the Republic of Latvia – the Constitution (Satversme), on the 6^th of May 2022 Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp and a cover that symbolically depict the strong and stable value of the Constitution in the life of every resident of the country. The new philatelic releases will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in the building of the Constitutional Court at 1 Jura Alunāna Street, Riga, from 10 AM to 3 PM on the 6^th of May 2022. 

The face value of the new stamp is €1.20, and it corresponds to the postage of letter-post items weighing up to 20 grams in Latvia. The print run of the stamp is 50,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 800 copies. The philatelic releases have been designed by Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja.

On the new postage stamp, the artist has symbolically depicted the strong and stable value of the Constitution in the daily life of every resident of the country. The visual design of the cover features the logo of the centenary of the Constitution created by the artist Dita Pence and calling for opening the Constitution and finding out the constitutional framework, the values contained therein and its significance today, as well as the history of its development. In the background of the cover you can also see the QR code, which can be used to visit the website www.satversme100.lv/ dedicated to the centenary of the Constitution. The website provides information on the Constitution and the events in honour of its centenary.

The Constitution was adopted by the Constitutional Assembly on the 15^th of February 1922, and it entered into force on the 7^th of November 1922. The Constitution of Latvia is one of the oldest constitutions in force in Europe, and it is not only a model of the constitutional thought of its time, but also the basis of a modern democratic state governed by the rule of law, which can be effectively applied in changing living conditions. Thus, the Constitution of Latvia is a unique example in the field of constitutional law, of which the Latvian state can be proud in the context of Europe and the world.
