Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp on the centenary of the diplomatic relations between Latvia and the USA

To mark the centenary of the diplomatic relations between Latvia and the United States of America (USA), Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp and a cover on the 28th of July 2022. The new philatelic releases will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in the post centre Sakta at 32 Brīvības bulvāris, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM on the 28th of July.

The print run of the new stamp is 50,000 copies and its face value is €1.98, which corresponds to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class up to 20 grams to the countries in Group 14. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 800 copies. The philatelic releases have been designed by the Estonian artist Indrek Ilves who has also been active in the field of stamp design for many years and is the author of several joint issues of Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian stamps, as well as previously created designs for individual stamps issued by Latvijas Pasts.

The USA is a notable strategic partner and ally of Latvia, and the two countries share a special relationship. The USA consistently pursued a policy of non-recognition of Latvia's occupation until the restoration of Latvia’s independence in 1991, made an invaluable contribution to the restoration of Latvia's independence and also promoted Latvia's integration into NATO and the European Union.

The Embassy of Latvia in Washington was the only embassy of this country abroad, which carried on with operations throughout the occupation of Latvia, continuing to represent the state of Latvia existing de jure, maintaining unchanged Latvia’s international legal status and fighting for the restoration of independence. Latvia highly values the USA’s contribution to European security, especially by maintaining the presence of forces in Latvia and the other Baltic states, which is essential for holding back any potential adversary.

The stamp and the cover Diplomatic Relations Between Latvia and the USA – 100 are available for viewing here.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 12th of August.
