Latvijas Pasts supplements the sports legends series and releases a stamp block in honour of Kārlis Kļava, a master of shooting sports

To make an addition to the series of postage stamps Legends of Latvian Sports, on the 26th of August 2022 Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp block to honour the outstanding Latvian master of shooting sports Kārlis Kļava (1907–1941), the first Latvian athlete who became the world champion in shooting sports with an automatic pistol. The new stamp block will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in Latvian Sport Museum at 9 Alksnāja Street, Riga, from 9 AM to 3 PM on the 26th of August.

The stamp block Legends of Latvian Sports – Kārlis Kļava has a print run of 9,000 copies and a face value of €4.45, corresponding to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class from 21 to 100 grams to the countries located in Group 12. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 800 copies. The new philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

In the visual design, the artist has used materials from the Latvian Sports Museum and photos from K. Kļava’s private archive.

K. Kļava (also Kļava-Talks) is a notable representative of Latvian shooting sports and the first Latvian athlete who won the title of world master or champion in shooting sports with an automatic pistol in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, in 1937. K. Kļava’s success was recognised with multiple awards: his comrades-in-arms, officers of the 6th Riga Infantry Regiment, gave him the regiment’s golden award pin, he was recognised as the best athlete of Latvia in 1937 in the ranking by the newspaper Sporta Pasaule [World of Sports], and for his accomplishment in Helsinki the champion was awarded the Order of Viesturs (5th class; 1938).

The new stamp block and the cover Legends of Latvian Sports – Kārlis Kļava can be seen here.

The series of postage stamps Legends of Latvian Sports was launched in 2021: the first philatelic release in the series was dedicated to Jānis Lūsis, a legendary javelin thrower. The philatelic releases issued in honour of Latvian sports legends can be viewed here

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 1st of September.
