Latvijas Pasts is holding a unique auction of sports stamp releases with exclusive autographs by athletes

For the first time during its existence, Latvijas Pasts is holding a unique auction of philatelic releases dedicated to sports: some of these releases are decorated with autographs by outstanding Latvian athletes. The auction is scheduled to start at 11:30 AM on the 26th of September 2022 with a special live broadcast on Facebook, in which representatives of Latvijas Pasts and the Latvian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation will participate, because it is the participants of these sports who are oftentimes the architects of Latvian sporting success.

Latvijas Pasts traditionally issues stamps dedicated to Latvian sports and athletes that highlight the achievements and successes of the country in various sports and competitions. Stamps with messages about the achievements of outstanding personalities in Latvian sports travel all over the world, promoting the overall recognition of the country.

“As a result of stamp releases and their presentations to various sports-related audiences over the years, Latvijas Pasts has accumulated a number of special copies of stamp issues in its collection. Promoting the importance of philately and reminding the public once again of the successes of athletes, we have decided to put some of the releases up for auction, with the hope that this step will encourage a greater number of young talents to take sports seriously and that we will once again have the opportunity to release new stamps,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

The auction will be opened on the Facebook profile of Latvijas Pasts at 11:30 AM on the 26th of September with a special live broadcast, which will see the participation of representatives of Latvijas Pasts and Secretary General of the Latvian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation Zintis Ekmanis, former European champion and Olympic bronze medallist in bobsleigh, who will also donate some of his own philatelic releases with exclusive autographs by athletes.

“In keeping with Latvijas Pasts efforts to promote Latvian sports, I also gradually accumulated a small collection of stamps dedicated to the luge sports. In my capacity as an active participant in the organisation of sports life, I have taken advantage of the opportunity and obtained exclusive autographs by athletes for Latvijas Pasts releases. I like this combination – sports and philately – so I am also offering several of these releases for the auction,” Zintis Ekmanis reveals.

The auction will be held on the website of Latvijas Pasts at https://veikals.pasts.lv/lv/izsoles, and anyone interested can participate in it by registering their participation in the auction. The auction will run for 10 days from the time of opening – ending on the 5th of October 2022 at midnight. The bidder with the highest bid will be the winner of the auction.

The Sports auction will offer nine lots with various philatelic rarities, such as first-day covers with autographs by athletes, including Olympic medallists.

Latvijas Pasts plans to organise a number of thematic auctions of philatelic materials. The first auction is dedicated to sports, while the next one is planned with Christmas-themed stamp releases. In case of customer interest, the auction cycle will be continued in 2023, with a variety of engaging themes and surprises in store.
