Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp block dedicated to Hilda Vīka in the series Outstanding Latvian Artists

On the 23rd of September 2022, Latvijas Pasts plans to issue the seventh stamp block in the series Outstanding Latvian Artists. The new release is devoted to the painter Hilda Vīka (1897–1963). It features motifs from the artist’s works held in the Latvian National Museum of Art and materials from the Misiņš Library of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia. The new block of two stamps will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in the post centre Sakta at 32 Brīvības bulvāris, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM on the 23rd of September.

To mark the 125th anniversary of H. Vīka, on the 23rd of September 2022, Latvijas Pasts releases a two-stamp block dedicated to the artist in the series Outstanding Latvian Artists with a print run of 10,000 copies and a special cover with a print run of 800 copies. The face value of each stamp is €1.20, which corresponds to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class up to 20 grams within Latvia. The philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Lilija Dinere.

In the visual design of the stamp block and the cover, the artist has used reproductions from the works by H. Vīka held in the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art: Rudenī (In Autumn) (the 1930s), Zem kastaņkoka (Under the Chestnut Tree) (1928), Rīta stundā (In the Morning Hour) (1927), Rudens (Autumn) (the 1930s) and Dienvidos (In the South) (the 1930s), as well as materials from the Misiņš Library of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia.

Hilda Vīka (Hildegarde Natālija Vīka-Eglīte) started to shine in the Latvian art scene in the 1920s–1930s. Mind and sensitivity, plots and characters created by nature and by her imagination blend beautifully in her creative work, displaying a naive naturalness. The artist’s creative legacy is extensive: it includes filigreed black and white drawings and fine, multi-coloured watercolours, uniquely stylised landscapes, portraits and self-portraits as well as nude paintings. She also wrote stories and novels, which she illustrated herself, and published several collections of short stories and poems.

The stamp block and the cover Hilda Vīka – 125 can be seen here.

The stamp series Outstanding Latvian Artists has been issued since 2016 and six stamp blocks dedicated to different Latvian artists have been released over this time: Janis Rozentāls (2016), Jānis Tīdemanis (2017), Ansis Cīrulis (2018), Johans Valters (2019), Gustavs Klucis (2020) and Jānis Pauļuks (2021).
