Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp dedicated to the centenary of the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia

To mark the centenary of the Parliament (Saeima) of the Republic of Latvia, on the 20th of October 2022 Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp and a cover that symbolically convey trust in the country’s greatest values – freedom, independence and democracy. The new philatelic releases will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in the post centre Sakta at 32 Brīvības bulvāris, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM on the 20th of October and the official presentation of the stamp will be held in the Parliament House at 10:35 AM.

The face value of the new stamp is €1.20, and it corresponds to the postage of letter-post items weighing up to 20 grams in Latvia. The print run of the stamp is 25,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 800 copies. The philatelic releases have been designed by Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja.

The visual design of the stamp and the cover was created in collaboration with the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia. To develop the design, the artist A. Ozola-Jaunarāja used the photo materials of Sarmīte Strautiņa, the leading researcher of the Institute of Horticulture and the plant breeder of the lilac variety dedicated to the centenary of the Parliament.

The Parliament centenary lilac variety has been bred at the Institute of Horticulture, and its name is Freedom (Brīve), which symbolically conveys trust in the country’s most treasured values – freedom, independence and democracy. The logo of the centenary of the Parliament of Latvia with a stylised lilac flower, surrounded by an amphitheatre-shaped layout of the parliament, can also be seen in the philatelic releases.

The Parliament of the Republic of Latvia is celebrating a significant anniversary this year: it has been 100 years since the 1st Parliament met for the first time: it gathered for its first session at noon on the 7th of November 1922. Along with the meeting of the Parliament, the Constitution (Satversme), which is the fundamental law of the Latvian State, came into force, determining the state system and the principles of public authority.

The 14th convocation of the Parliament will start its work on the 1st of November 2022. The basic principles of the election and operation of the Parliament have remained unchanged over time.

The official presentation of the new philatelic releases will be held in the Parliament House at 10:35 AM on the 20th of October.
