Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp in honour of the 150th birthday of Jānis Endzelīns, an outstanding linguist

On the 22nd of February 2023, Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp and a cover in honour of the 150th anniversary of Jānis Endzelīns (1873–1961), an outstanding linguist. The new stamp will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in the University of Latvia at 19 Raiņa bulvāris, Riga, from 9 AM to 5 PM on the 22nd of February.

The face value of the new stamp is €1.83, which corresponds to the postage of items in the weight class up to 20 grams to the countries in Group 3, and the print run of the stamp is 25,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 500 copies.

The philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Lilija Dinere. In the visual design of the stamp and the cover, the artist has used materials from the Misiņš Library of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia.

Jānis Endzelīns, a linguist and one of the most important creators of the modern Latvian literary language, promoted the research of Latvian and other Baltic languages as the founder of Baltistics, highlighting their importance in the world language family. His contribution to linguistics has also been appreciated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) by including his 150th anniversary in the UNESCO calendar of celebrations for 2022–2023.

UNESCO stresses the importance of languages in the formation of cultural heritage and identity. That is why it contributes to preserving their diversity in its activities. The diversity of languages is summarised in the new UNESCO World Atlas of Languages that presents data on almost seven thousand languages, most of which are in danger of extinction.

The new stamp and the cover Jānis Endzelīns – 150 can be viewed here.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 10th of March.
