Latvijas Pasts in collaboration with the Latvian Fund for Nature dedicates a stamp to the vendace, a rare and protected fish species

Latvijas Pasts in collaboration with the Latvian Fund for Nature has issued a new stamp and cover featuring a rare and endangered fish, the vendace or the European cisco. The new philatelic release will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place at Riga post office No. 10, 41/43 Elizabetes Street, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM on the 10th of March.

The face value of the new stamp is €1.52 and it corresponds to the postage of items in the weight class up to 20 grams to the countries in Groups 4 and 6, while its print run is 50,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 500 copies. The stamp and the cover have been designed by the artist Edgars Folks.

The vendace or the European cisco (Coregonus albula) is a 7–23 centimetre long, cold-loving and oxygen-demanding high-value fish species of the salmonid order whose use in Latvia is restricted. It is subject to special protection and is included in Category 3 of the Latvian Red Data Book. In Vidzeme and Kurzeme, this fish is called the vendace, and in Latgale, Selia, Lithuania and Poland it is known as the cisco.

The vendace is found in lakes in Latvia that are relatively large, deep and mostly clean. There were 64 lakes in Latvia where the vendace was found during the past hundred years, but only 18 lakes are home to it today. The vendace has disappeared from other lakes due to water pollution, which decreases or eliminates oxygen in the deep layers of lakes.

The new stamp and the cover Vendace can be viewed here.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 31st of March.
