Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp to mark the 100th anniversary of Pēteris Pētersons, a prominent Latvian director

Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp and a cover to mark the 100th birthday of Pēteris Pētersons, a prominent Latvian director, translator, playwright and public figure. The new philatelic releases will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place at Riga post office No. 10, 41/43 Elizabetes Street, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM on the 24th of May 2023.

The face value of the new stamp is €1.65, and it corresponds to the postage of letter-post items weighing up to 20 grams in Latvia. The print run of the stamp is 25,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 500 copies.

The philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Jānis Strupulis who depicted a portrait of P. Pētersons on the philatelic issues.

P. Pētersons (1923–1998) is a Latvian playwright, theatre director, critic and drama theorist, translator, publicist and public figure. P. Pētersons is included in Latvia’s Cultural Canon as the creator of the Latvian poetic theatre. He was the director of the XX Latvian Song Festival (1990), chairman of the Riga Latvian Society (1993–1998) and honorary member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences from 1993.

P. Pētersons worked in the Dailes Theatre, serving as the artistic director of this theatre from 1964 to 1971. During the later years of his career, P. Pētersons mostly created productions for the Youth Theatre and the National Theatre – he produced 46 performances in total. P. Pētersons represented the poetic drama genre in Latvian theatre, both in his own directions as well as in theoretical reflections, dramatisations, and plays that he staged in many instances himself. Eight plays by P. Pētersons have been performed in Latvian theatres.
