On the 2nd of September 2023, Latvijas Pasts released a new stamp dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the narrow-gauge railway line Gulbene-Alūksne, which is the only regularly operating line of its kind in the Baltics. The stamp features the railway locomotive Ferdinands as it arrives at the Stāmeriena station, the most popular stop of the annual Bānītis festival. The design of the stamp dedicated to the anniversary has been created by the artist Aleksejs Naumovs. The stamp will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first-day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in the building of the Stāmeriena narrow-gauge railway station, Stāmeriena, from 1 PM to 4 PM on the 2nd of September.
The face value of the new stamp is € 1.83, and it corresponds to the postage of items in the weight class up to 20 grams to the countries in Group 10, while its print run is 50,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 500 copies. The stamp and the cover have been designed by the artist Aleksejs Naumovs.
The narrow-gauge railway Gulbene-Alūksne, or Bānītis, as the locals call it, is a cultural and historical railway segment that has survived from a more than 210-kilometre-long railway line on the route Pļaviņas-Gulbene-Alūksne-Ape-Valka. The section Gulbene-Alūksne is 33 kilometers long and it is the only railway line in the Baltics that still offers regular passenger service. Bānītis operates on the line every day, and there is the option of taking a ride with the historic steam locomotive Ferdinands twice a month.
The new stamp and the cover Narrow-Gauge Railway – Gulbene-Alūksne can be viewed here.
The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 23rd of September 2023.
