On the 6th of October 2023, Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp and a cover to mark the 175th anniversary of Ādolfs Alunāns (1848–1912), founder of Latvian theatre, actor, playwright, and director. The new stamp will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first-day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place at Riga post office No. 10, 41/43 Elizabetes Street, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM on the 6th of October 2023.
The print run of the new stamp is 25,000 copies and the print run of the cover is 500 copies. The face value of the stamp is €1.97, corresponding to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class from 21 to 100 grams within Latvia.
The philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Lilija Dinere. In the visual design of the stamp and the cover, the artist has used materials from the Misiņš Library of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia.
Ā.Alunāns began his acting career in German theatres outside of Latvia – in Tarbatu, Reval, Narva, and St. Petersburg. In July 1869, he appeared for the first time in a Latvian theatrical performance in Riga, staging his one-act play Raised by Us (Pašu audzināts). Soon after, Ā.Alunāns, with a theatrical troupe he founded in Jelgava, started touring all over Latvia with guest appearances. Later in cultural history, Ā.Alunāns, known as the father of Latvian theatre, became the first manager of the Latvian theatre in Riga, establishing the genre of drama and comedy in national literature with 13 plays and gaining popularity as an actor, mostly in comic roles. Ā.Alunāns also published his couplets and a collection of humorous satirical poems, wrote feuilletons, stories, and biographical reflections, and created the Joker’s Calendar (Zobgala kalendārs) for more than 20 years. Ā.Alunāns mainly composed literary works, taking into account their appropriateness for the stage of the given era and infusing contemporary issues of interest into them.
The new stamp and the cover Ādolfs Alunāns – 175 can be seen here.
The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 1st of November.
