This year’s stamps in joint Europa series feature protected underwater flora and fauna

On the 26th of April 2024, Latvijas Pasts releases two stamps in the joint Europa stamp series, which this year is dedicated to underwater flora and fauna. The first day cancellation of the stamps is scheduled to take place at the Elizabetes Street post office, 41/43 Elizabetes Street, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM on the 26th of April.

One of the stamps depicts the slender naiad, while the other features the brown trout. The philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Edgars Folks. The print run of each of the new stamps is 25,000 copies, and the print run of the cover is 500.

The face value of the Slender Naiad stamp is €1.88, which corresponds to the postage of items in the weight class up to 20 grams to the countries in Group 12. The face value of the Brown Trout stamp is €1.91, and it is intended for items in the weight class up to 20 grams to the countries in Group 11.

The slender naiad (Najas flexilis) is a rare and relict aquatic plant found in Eurasia and North America, with almost twenty habitats known in Latvia: these are mainly clean and clear lakes in the south-eastern part of the country, as well as Lake Alauksts, Lake Indzeris, Lake Kalnis and Lake Usma. The Habitats Directive of the Council of Europe provides for the designation of special areas of conservation for the protection of the slender naiad. The species in Latvia is threatened by pollution of lakes and changes in the water level. The Slender Naiad stamp depicts the leaves of the plant, the staminate and pistillate flowers, as well as the seeds of the plant.

The brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) is a fish of the family Salmonidae that inhabits the clean and shallow rapids of European rivers and is considered a freshwater subspecies of the taimen. In Latvia, the brown trout is found in most small rivers and plays an important role in the preservation of the disappearing pearl mussel. The species in Latvia is threatened by river pollution, flow disturbances and overfishing. The Brown Trout stamp features the common water moss and red algae characteristic of clean rivers, as well as the river limpet.

The originator of the Europa series stamps is PostEurop, the association of European public postal operators, and the stamps of this series with a single logo and a common theme have been issued since 1994. In previous years, the themes of the Europa stamps were dedicated to ornithology, literature, natural attractions, travel, postal transport, old toys, eco-friendly lifestyle, castles, railway, ancient postal routes, and stories and myths.

The new stamps will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities and in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts: https://veikals.pasts.lv/.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 10th of May.

Philatelic works issued by Latvijas Pasts are highly valued both among the customers and philatelic collectors and experts. Based on stringently regulated standards, international associations of collectors of philatelic materials have determined that the stamps issued by Latvijas Pasts are on par with the philatelic releases issued by the largest countries in the world. As a result, these stamps are routinely included both in the catalogues of philatelic releases recognised around the world and in the collections of prestigious collectors.
