The 2024 stamp collection created by Latvijas Pasts is now available to philatelic enthusiasts and other interested individuals at major post offices and through the Latvijas Pasts e-shop. It features all the stamps released this year, enabling customers to explore not only their favourite series but also the uniquely crafted special issues.
The 2024 stamp collection of Latvijas Pasts features 19 issues, consisting of 22 stamps and three stamp blocks, with a total circulation exceeding one million copies. Stamp collections are particularly popular among philatelists for their ease of viewing and convenience, as they include all the stamps issued throughout the year.
Just like every year, Latvijas Pasts' philatelic releases this year showcased a rich diversity in both themes and visual solutions. The stamps pay tribute to distinguished personalities, honouring Latvian writer Vilis Plūdons (1874-1940) and composer and choir conductor Emilis Melngailis (1874-1954) on their 150th birth anniversaries. The stamps also commemorate events of importance for Latvia. For example, Latvia's membership of NATO, the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, the centenary of the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum, and the 50th anniversary of Riga Airport have been highlighted. This year, Latvijas Pasts has also released a special stamp block dedicated to the medallists of Paralympic Games.
The stamps also highlight the country's cultural heritage: the Gauja rafters, and in a separate issue in the Historical Ships series – the two-masted sailing ship built in Vitrupe.
In 2024, Latvijas Pasts continued issuing the stamp series familiar to customers, including a stamp block dedicated to checkers player Andris Andreiko (1942–1976) in the Latvian Sports Legends series, while the Outstanding Latvian Artists series was expanded with a stamp block honouring the painter Jāzeps Grosvalds (1891–1920). Two new stamps were added to the Latvian Birds series: the 2024 bird of the year – the little tern, and the Eurasian sparrowhawk, while the stamps of the European common series introduced the underwater flora and fauna of Latvia. The Domestic Animal series also features new additions.
In collaboration with the Latvian Fund for Nature, a new stamp was issued in recognition of a rare and endangered plant – the bird’s-eye primrose. A new philatelic issue was also released in tribute to Kuldīga and the Victory Monument in Cēsis.
Artist Aleksejs Naumovs has created a stamp for the Ķemeri National Park, designing it in the form of a miniature painting and depicting the park's typical landscape and the Great Ķemeri Bog boardwalk. This year, the Christmas stamp series was designed by artist and illustrator Roberts Rūrāns, who is well known both in Latvia and internationally. His work demonstrates how a stamp can blend artistic beauty, meaningful depth of the story, and functionality.
Two traditional series of philatelic issues in 2024 – a total of six stamps – were released in self-adhesive format: the Domestic Animals and Christmas series.
A stamp is a postage payment mark used to cover the cost of postal items, while it can also be a valuable collector's item. A specially established Stamp Issuance Commission determines the Latvian stamp release plan.
